Turn.io or RapidPro/TextIt: choosing a platform for your programme

Turn.io and RapidPro/TextIt are both used for programme chatbots, but they suit different needs. This guide sets out the questions that usually decide the choice.

The platforms in brief

Turn.io is a hosted platform built around WhatsApp, combining automated journeys with tools for teams who respond to participants directly.

RapidPro is an open-source platform for building messaging flows across several channels, such as SMS and WhatsApp. It can be self-hosted or run as a managed deployment. TextIt is a hosted service from the team behind RapidPro.

Features, plans, and pricing change over time. Check current details with each provider before deciding.

Which channels do you need?

If your participants are almost entirely on WhatsApp, a WhatsApp-focused platform may be all you need. If you need SMS for participants without smartphones, or want the option to move between channels, a multi-channel platform gives you more room.

Will people respond as well as the bot?

Some programmes need staff or counsellors to pick up conversations the bot cannot handle. Consider how each platform supports handover to a person, and how your team would work day to day.

How much control do you need over hosting and data?

Some funders and partners require data to stay in a particular jurisdiction or on infrastructure the organisation controls. A self-hosted or dedicated RapidPro deployment can meet that requirement. A hosted service is simpler to start with but gives you less say over where and how it runs. BotFlow Host operates dedicated RapidPro infrastructure for programmes that need it.

Who will maintain the journeys?

Think about who will edit content and flows after launch. The platform your team can confidently maintain is usually a better choice than the one with the longest feature list.

Compare the full cost model

Include platform subscriptions, messaging charges from channel providers, any hosting costs, and the time needed to build and maintain journeys. Messaging charges apply whichever platform you choose.

If you are thinking of switching

Journeys rarely move between platforms unchanged. Plan for an inventory of what exists, rebuilding and testing on the new platform, moving contact data where appropriate, and training your team.

Migration and handover

Need help with this?

We move agreed journeys between platforms, with testing and handover. BotFlow Dev works on your existing Turn.io or RapidPro/TextIt workspace.

Connecting RapidPro flows to your systems with webhooks

Webhooks let a RapidPro or TextIt flow send data to, or fetch data from, another system mid-conversation. Used well, they keep your programme systems in step with the chatbot.
